In 1986, producers were searching for a new James Bond after Roger Moore ended his long run as Agent 007.<\/span>
\nSam Neill was invited to screen-test for The Living Daylights, an opportunity capable of transforming almost any actor into an international superstar overnight.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Neill did not enter the audition room dreaming about tuxedos, Aston Martins or the enormous career waiting behind the famous gun-barrel sequence.<\/span>
\nHe entered knowing his friend Pierce Brosnan wanted the role desperately, making the glamorous opportunity feel more like an uncomfortable intrusion into another man\u2019s dream.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI really did not want that part and my friend Pierce Brosnan wanted it so much,\u201d Neill later admitted.<\/span>
\nThat confession revealed his discomfort was not simply ordinary audition anxiety or fear of carrying one of cinema\u2019s most recognizable characters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Neill reportedly felt awkward during the test, never fully embracing the possibility that he might defeat Brosnan for a role his friend had passionately pursued.<\/span>
