By the early 1990s, Johnny Cash had become a towering American icon trapped inside an industry that no longer seemed interested in hearing him.<\/span>
\nColumbia Records had ended their decades-long relationship, while his later Mercury releases arrived with little promotion and disappeared almost as quickly as they were issued.<\/span><\/p>\n

For an artist once known as the Man in Black, the silence surrounding his new music carried a particularly cruel message.<\/span>
\nNashville had not erased Cash\u2019s history, but its gatekeepers appeared convinced that his future belonged behind him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then Rick Rubin entered the picture with a proposal that sounded almost reckless.<\/span>
\nRubin was celebrated for producing rap and hard rock, not for rescuing aging country legends whose commercial power had seemingly faded.<\/span><\/p>\n
