In the 1970s, writer Larry Cohen developed The Hostiles<\/em>, a Western built around two sharply different men forced into an uneasy partnership. One was an aging rancher, while the other was a younger gambler who unexpectedly won half of the rancher\u2019s estate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clint Eastwood reportedly recognized the project\u2019s potential and believed the central conflict could become even more powerful with John Wayne opposite him. The idea promised something Hollywood had never delivered: two of the most recognizable Western stars confronting each other inside the same frontier drama.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eastwood sent the screenplay to Wayne, hoping the veteran actor would accept the role and create a once-in-a-generation cinematic event. Wayne declined, but Eastwood did not immediately abandon the possibility of bringing their contrasting screen personas together.<\/span><\/p>\n
