On January 24, 1967, Aretha Franklin entered FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals searching for the sound that could finally unlock her full power. By the end of the day, she had recorded \u201cI Never Loved a Man,\u201d but the session\u2019s momentum was already falling apart.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bassist David Hood later remembered the atmosphere from the musicians\u2019 perspective, describing a room where the players were largely unaware of the tensions building around them. \u201cThe rest of the guys didn\u2019t really know what was going on. I wasn\u2019t drinking. You don\u2019t go to work and drink,\u201d he recalled.<\/span><\/p>\n
