In June 1967, Peter Green was preparing to leave John Mayall\u2019s Bluesbreakers and build a band devoted to uncompromising Chicago blues. He had the vision, the intensity and the beginnings of a lineup, but one crucial piece was still missing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Producer Mike Vernon believed that piece might be Jeremy Spencer, a young guitarist whose trio was booked to support the Bluesbreakers at Birmingham\u2019s Metro Club. Vernon arranged the meeting, giving Green an opportunity to hear Spencer before making a decision that could shape his proposed band.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe wanted to hear me play because he wanted to form a new band and was intense about doing straight Chicago blues,\u201d Spencer later recalled. The invitation carried enormous promise, but the audition itself apparently left Spencer convinced he had failed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Spencer\u2019s style was heavily influenced by Elmore James, with sharp slide-guitar lines and a raw blues attack that set him apart from more conventional British players. Even so, he did not leave the performance feeling certain that Green had heard anything worth building around.<\/span><\/p>\n

The uncertainty made Green\u2019s response even more surprising. Rather than quietly moving on to another guitarist, he approached Spencer and offered him a place in the still-unformed group.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then Green revealed something far more intimate than a standard musician\u2019s compliment. He opened a notebook containing a prayer he had written while traveling north to Birmingham, before the two men had even met.<\/span><\/p>\n

The message reportedly expressed Green\u2019s hope that Spencer would be good enough to join him. It showed that the celebrated guitarist had not arrived as a detached talent scout casually comparing candidates; he had emotionally invested in the possibility that this stranger might complete his plan.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Spencer, the notebook transformed the encounter from an ordinary audition into something almost fated. He had assumed his playing had disappointed Green, while Green had entered the room privately hoping the exact opposite would happen.<\/span><\/p>\n

That contrast exposed the fragility behind Fleetwood Mac\u2019s beginnings. The band that would eventually survive lineup changes, personal conflict and dramatic musical reinvention initially depended on Green driving toward Birmingham with little more than an idea and a written plea.<\/span><\/p>\n

Spencer accepted the offer, joining Green and drummer Mick Fleetwood as the new group began taking shape. Bassist John McVie would soon complete the classic early lineup, and the band adopted a name built from Fleetwood\u2019s surname and part of McVie\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the records, tours and mythology, however, there was a notebook carrying the founder\u2019s private uncertainty. Green\u2019s prayer suggested that he understood technical ability alone would not be enough; he needed a player whose instincts matched the music he could already hear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Spencer\u2019s memory also complicates the image of Green as a fearless bandleader who simply assembled the strongest musicians available. Beneath that confidence was a man urgently hoping that one meeting would validate the risky future he was trying to create.<\/span><\/p>\n
