A 9,000-Pound Vault Refused to Stop Sliding Through Fast Five — Stunt Chief Jack Gill Remembered the Material That Made Control Worse turned the movie’s wildest chase into an engineering nightmare hiding beneath blockbuster spectacle.

The explosive finale of Fast Five looked almost too outrageous to be real, with two Dodge Chargers dragging a massive bank vault through crowded Rio streets. Yet stunt coordinator Jack Gill revealed that much of the destruction was created with practical effects, including a genuine 9,000-pound steel vault.

The challenge was not simply getting the enormous object to move behind the cars. Gill and his crew also had to control its direction, speed and violent sideways swings while protecting stunt drivers, camera operators and buildings positioned throughout the carefully planned route.

To make the vault slide more easily, the team initially placed Delrin plastic underneath it. The material dramatically reduced friction, appearing to provide the perfect solution for moving thousands of pounds of steel across the ground.

“The problem we found out with the Delrin is once you get the vault moving, it doesn’t want to stop,” Gill recalled. A clever technical adjustment had suddenly created a much larger and more dangerous problem.

Once the vault gained momentum, the stunt team struggled to control its sideways movement. Instead of behaving like a heavy object that could be slowed predictably, it continued sliding freely, threatening to travel beyond the path designed for each shot.

That loss of control was especially serious because the vault chase depended on precise timing. Cars needed to turn within narrow spaces while the steel structure demolished carefully prepared obstacles without drifting toward people or equipment outside the stunt zone.

The crew eventually removed the Delrin from the setup used during the street sequences. They accepted greater resistance beneath the vault because stopping and steering the object mattered far more than making it glide effortlessly behind the Chargers.

However, the filmmakers still needed the chase to look brutal and visually spectacular. Steel and titanium surfaces were added underneath the vault, producing the showers of sparks that erupted whenever it scraped violently across the pavement.

Those sparks became one of the sequence’s defining images, making the vault appear even more destructive as it tore through cars, concrete and storefronts. What audiences saw as raw cinematic chaos was actually the result of constant experimentation with weight, friction and replaceable materials.

Multiple vault versions and specialized rigs were used to achieve different shots safely. Some setups emphasized movement and control, while others were designed to absorb collisions or produce the dramatic destruction demanded by director Justin Lin’s enormous finale.

The practical vault also gave the actors’ vehicles something physically convincing to react against. Every turn, impact and burst of sparks carried real weight, helping the sequence feel grounded even as its central idea pushed far beyond ordinary reality.

Gill’s memory exposes how quickly an apparently useful material can become the greatest threat on a stunt set. Delrin solved the problem of movement so completely that it nearly eliminated the crew’s ability to stop what they had unleashed.

Fast Five’s vault chase ultimately became one of the franchise’s most celebrated action sequences. Behind its roaring engines and collapsing streets, however, stood a stunt team learning that moving 9,000 pounds was only half the battle—stopping it was the real danger.
